Dr. Debdas Ray has received his Ph.D. degree in 2008 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. His doctoral research was conducted under the supervision of Professor Parimal K. Bharadwaj, and focused on designing various supramolecular receptors for sensing and nonlinear optical studies. He then carried out first postdoctoral research in Professor Dario M. Bassani’s Group at University of Bordeaux1 (2009-2011), where he focused on the synthesis of fullerene (C60) and anthracene monolayers on silicon surfaces as well as various fullerene derivatives having hydrogen-bonding recognition unit for organic electronics. He did his second postdoctoral research with Professor Ivan Aprahamian (2011-2012) at Dartmouth College, USA, where he focused on hydrazine-based rotary switches for coordination-coupled proton relay mimicking proton translocation in biological systems. His third postdoctoral research was carried out in Professor Takashi Nakanishi’s group (2012-2013) at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, where he focused on neutral solvent-free liquid organometallic complexes of platinum(II) and iridium(III) for optoelectronic applications. He joined the Department of Chemistry at Shiv Nadar University as an Assistant Professor in July 2013. See full CV.

Photo-functional Materials –Triplet Management
Research in the group focuses on using modular, and tunable organic donor-acceptor conjugates in the development of structurally simple adaptive photo-functional materials, e.g., dual emitter (singlet/triplet harvesting), white-light emitter (singlet-triplet harvesting), thermo-phosphors (triplet harvesting), molecular switches, and responsive emitters. For this purpose we utilize synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry in conjunction with advanced spectroscopic methods and computational calculations.
Our interest in controlling non-radiative pathways above room-temperature and compensate its emission loss via either structural change or energy transfer has driven us to the development of new donor-acceptor conjugates that can show photoluminescence enhancement with increasing temperarure (above room-temperature). These novel systems are expected to form the basis of singlet and triplet harvesting that can be used in applications ranging from solar thermal photovoltaics (STPVs), high energy-efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), security-imaging, sensors to sensitizers. In this regard, the group is also developing purely organic Blue-Violet-Phosphorescent materials that can be used in above applications.
Our group also focuses on amorphous organic materials that can show persistent photoluminescence. These materials have potential applications in security-imaging, invisible security ink, data encryption/decryption, anticounterfitting, sensors and bioimaging.
Photoswitch
The group is also developing new phosphorescence switches that can be used in molecular solar energy storage (MOST) devices.
