Abstract:

Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms bonded into a honeycomb two-dimensional lattice, has extraordinary properties and wide applications such as functional films, electric devices and energy storage devices (Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors), etc. Different from graphene, graphene oxide (GO) contains high-density oxygen functionalized groups, like hydroxyl, epoxy and carboxyl group with excellent water solubility, ease of functionalization and convenience in processing etc. making it the most popular precursor of graphene. It is of great significance to develop economical, eco-friendly and scalable routes to produce GO which has a great significance in biological applications. First two chapters in this thesis describe the preparation (including synthesis and functionalization) and material properties with detailing a whole range of applications and information on challenges and perspectives. The application structured in the third chapter is based on graphene-oxide coated surfaces and their surface functionalities in inhibition of biofilm growth. The fourth and fifth chapter consists of polymer functionalized graphene oxide based nanocarriers for its better stability and effective siRNA and drug delivery for cancer therapeutics.
